Life is full of ups and downs. And I, like many others, are all too aware of that. Something that gives me strength through my most trying times is my devotion to a set of treasured verses that serve as my guiding light and source of solace.
Each of these verses has been a source of inspiration, comfort, and guidance. They not only accompany me when life feels difficult, but also actively shaped the course of my journey. Now, I want to share them with you because sharing scripture doesn’t have to be hard.
So, here are my seven most treasured verses from the New International Version of the Bible and the items I have found that beautifully capture their meaning.
‘He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds, you have been healed.’
—1 Peter 2:24
This is a beautiful verse that speaks to the healing and transformation that come through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. It encourages us to live a righteous life. This verse holds special meaning to me, and I hold it close to my heart by wearing a silver cross necklace, a tangible and cherished symbol of the transformative power of Christ’s love and sacrifices.
While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in clothes and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them.
—Luke 2:6-7
This verse describes the humble birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and the Holy Family’s journey, emphasizing the simplicity and quietude of that sacred night. I keep a holy family figurine on my bedside table to remind me that even in life’s most challenging moments, there is a quiet, sacred beauty in the love and grace that surrounds us.
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.
—Hebrews 6:19-20a
Hope is something I have struggled to hold onto, especially in my darkest hours. But I’ve come to realize that even in the bleakest of moments, hope has a way of finding its way back into our hearts. To keep this in mind, I proudly wear a cuff bracelet with part of the scripture written on it to remind me that there’s always hope to be found.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
—Proverbs 3:5-6
There are times in my life when I have felt completely lost, and then I remember this verse. Proverbs 3:5-6 has been my true north, reminding me to trust in divine guidance. I wear a compass necklace around my neck, serving as a constant reminder that even when life’s path seems uncertain, God is my guiding light.
But those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
—Isaiah 40:31
Life is hard, and sometimes my strength falters. This verse reminds me to put my hope and faith in the Lord for a promise of renewed strength. To remember this promise, I have mounted a painting of an eagle in flight inside my living room as the main focal point.
Be still, and know that I am God.
—Psalm 46:10a
I try to practice mindfulness in my life, and part of mindfulness is being still and fully present in the moment. Reminding me of the need for stillness in my life is a painting of a calm lake hanging above my bed. The painting reminds me that amidst the hustle and bustle of life, I must pause, be still, and find that inner quiet. It’s in that silence I often feel closest to the divine, reminded that, in the grand scheme of things, everything has its place and purpose.
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
—Psalm 27:1
I keep a candle holder on my desk with the inscription ‘The Lord is my Light’ to remind me of God’s guidance and protection in times of darkness. Unfortunately, I have had many dark days, but this candle holder serves as a beacon of hope and reminds me of God’s light.It’s as if the flame symbolizes the presence of God, assuring me that even in my darkest moments, I am not alone.
